Audience

Organize Subscribers with Tags
Tags are how you segment your audience in Maildesk — learn how to create them, apply them, and use them to target campaigns and trigger automations.
In Maildesk, tags are the segmentation primitive. There’s no separate “segments” or “lists” feature — instead, you label subscribers with tags and then target or trigger based on those tags everywhere else in the app. Once you internalize this, the whole product clicks.
Create a tag
- Navigate to Automations > Tags.
- Click Add Tag.
- Give it a name (e.g.
Newsletter,Customer,Welcome Sequence) and an optional description. - Save.
Good tags describe either who someone is (customer, lead, vip) or what they did (downloaded-ebook, attended-webinar, signed-up-via-homepage).
Apply tags to subscribers
There are three ways a subscriber gets a tag:
1. Manually, on the subscriber page
Open any subscriber from Subscribers, use the Tags multi-select on their detail page, and save. You can even create a new tag right from this screen.
2. Automatically, via a form
When you build a signup form, the Automation Tags setting applies your chosen tags to everyone who submits it. This is the most common way to route new subscribers into a welcome sequence.
3. Via the API
If you’re technical, the Maildesk API lets you create and attach tags programmatically — useful for tagging users when they sign up for your product or buy something.
What tags unlock
Targeted campaigns
In the campaign composer’s Audience modal, you can send to all subscribers or build a filter: match all, any, or none of the tags you pick, with a live recipient count as you build it. See Send your first campaign.
Automation triggers and exits
Automations can enroll a contact when a tag is added (or removed), and exit conditions can remove contacts who have or don’t have a tag. See Set up your first automation.
A simple starter taxonomy
| Tag | Applied by | Used for |
|---|---|---|
newsletter | Signup form | Your regular campaign audience |
welcome-sequence | Signup form | Triggering the welcome automation |
customer | Manually or API | Excluding buyers from sales campaigns |
vip | Manually | Early-access announcements |
Keep tags few and purposeful — a dozen meaningful tags beat a hundred forgotten ones.
